Always carry your physical passport with you, and try to bulk your purchases to hit the 5,000 JPY mark at a single store to maximize your savings. Crucially, from November 1, 2026 onward, the system requires you to show the physical cards at the airport to get your money back. We highly recommend packing your purchased cards in your carry-on luggage so you can easily present them at Customs. Use the TCG Finder Japan Map to locate tax-free shops and snag your dream cards at a great price!

If you're hunting for rare single cards or sealed boxes in Japan, taking advantage of the Tax-Free shopping system is a must! Japan has a 10% consumption tax, so buying tax-free can save you a significant amount of money. This guide explains the conditions for shopping tax-free at TCG stores, the exact procedures, and the new Tax-Free rules starting November 1, 2026. 1. Tax-Free Eligibility Conditions To shop tax-free, you must meet all of the following requirements: ・Eligible Persons: Foreign tourists staying in Japan for less than 6 months (your immigration status must be "Temporary Visitor"). ・Purchase Amount: You must spend at least 5,000 JPY before tax (5,500 JPY including tax) at the same store on the same day. ・Purpose: Items must be for personal use, not for business or resale. 2. You CAN Open TCGs in Japan! (Note: This section applies to the current system until October 31, 2026. Under the new system starting in November, restrictions on all items will be lifted, meaning everything can be opened.) Under Japan's current tax-free system, items are categorized into "General Goods" (electronics, toys, etc.) and "Consumables" (food, cosmetics, etc.). Trading cards are classified as "General Goods." ・No Restrictions on Opening: Unlike consumables, cards will not be sealed in a special "do not open until you leave Japan" bag. You are free to open your packs at your hotel or play with the cards during your stay. ・Must Be Taken Out of Japan: However, you are strictly required to take the purchased cards out of Japan with you. 3. What You Need for Tax-Free Shopping ・Your Original Passport: Copies or smartphone photos are NOT accepted. You must have your physical passport. ・Entry Stamp: Your passport must have a "Temporary Visitor" entry stamp. If you use an automated facial recognition gate at the airport, you will not receive a stamp automatically. Be sure to ask a customs officer to stamp your passport immediately after passing the gate. 4. Store Procedures [IMPORTANT: New Rules from Nov 2026!] Japan's tax-free system will undergo a major change to a Refund System starting November 1, 2026. Please be aware of which system applies during your trip. ■ Until October 31, 2026 (Current Instant Deduction System) ①Show Passport at the Register: Tell the staff "Tax-Free, please" and hand them your original passport. ②Pay the Tax-Free Price: The store will handle the paperwork. You simply pay the final amount with the 10% tax already deducted. ③Departure Procedure: At the airport Customs area, simply scan your passport at the designated reader before leaving the country. ■ From November 1, 2026 (New Refund System) ①Pay the FULL Price (Including Tax) at the Store: You will no longer get an instant discount at the register. You must pay the full 10% consumption tax upfront. ②Register for a Refund: The store will provide instructions to access a dedicated website or app where you will register your preferred refund method (credit card, electronic money, etc.). ③Get Your Refund at the Airport: When departing Japan, you must present your purchased cards and your passport to Customs to prove you are taking them out of the country. Once verified, the 10% tax will be refunded to your registered payment method at a later date. Warning: If you do not have the cards with you at the airport (e.g., you resold them in Japan or gave them to a friend), you will not receive the tax refund. 5. Used Single Cards are Also Eligible! Japan's second-hand TCG market is famous for its high-quality conditions, making it a primary target for tourists. As long as you are shopping at a tax-free registered store, used single cards displayed in the showcases are just as eligible for tax exemption as brand-new packs and boxes. 6. Official Contact Information If you experience trouble while shopping or have detailed questions about the tax-free rules, please refer to these official Japanese government resources: ・Japan Visitor Hotline (JNTO) A 24/7 hotline for foreign tourists. You can receive multilingual support (including English) for general tax-free inquiries or travel troubles. Phone: 050-3816-2787 ・Official Information Sites (English) For the latest updates on tax-free rules, check the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) page "Japan's Tax Exemption" or the Japan Tourism Agency's "Japan Tax-free Shop" guide. https://www.japan.travel/en/plan/japans-tax-exemption/ https://www.mlit.go.jp/kankocho/tax-free/page01_000001_00028.html
